2020 DOT Federal Drug Testing Changes

Do you own your own company or work under an entity under DOT? Did you know that federal DOT is changing how they monitor and implement drug testing in 2020? Who is required to participate? Those that own a company or work for someone need to be compliant January 6,2020. Including owner/operators especially!

Now more than ever it is important to have a random drug/alcohol program established if you drive for any entity of DOT. The Clearinghouse is an online system that will be required in 2020 and will require companies to register. What is a clearinghouse?

The clearinghouse is a national system that will track all drug tests performed for any branch of DOT including all of those who have their CDL. This means that any positive tests will now be applied to your driver's license and can impact DMV and federal decision to renew your CDL. It also means that come January if your company is not registered or sending in randoms, the federal government will immediately know and can suspend your CDL or your company will get fined. There will be specific requirements for companies when you hire a new driver and then yearly to show your compliance.

Steps to get compliant:

1. Go to the federal clearinghouse website: https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/

2. Create an account with yellow register button and see if your company or drivers need to create account. Create login.gov account to access FMCSA

3. Set up a random drug/alcohol testing program to be compliant. FMCSA requires 25% of employees get drug tested and 10% of employees get breath alcohol tested.
